Ash TG TF Final by JohnColburn Ash TG TF Final by JohnColburn
Right so here's another one I might have uploaded a REALLY long time ago. This was commissioned by the infamous ~455510 months ago. You may even have seen a version of it, and you'll probably notice one major difference.

This one is in color.

I made a deal with him that he could commission it in black&white at a lower price than normal if he paid the difference for color later. Unfortunately, he never paid for the color like he said he would.

Fun fact: It's actually harder for me to draw something without color. That's why I never officially offered a "no color" option; it's going to have colors no matter what you ask for. I figured since the guy had commissioned me so many times he probably wouldn't leave me hanging... but then he did.

Let this be a reminder for anybody working by commission: Never ever ever do ANY work you have not been paid for. Ever. No exceptions unless you have a contract and a lawyer and you think you can extract the payment through legal action if necessary. I've never had an honest customer who had any problem paying upfront for anything. If someone is getting shifty about payment it's a bad sign.

Anyway, since I'm out of the commission business now, this is the final Ash TG TF. I didn't actually know that when I wrote the dialogue, so it's kind of funny that it fits so well. No point keeping it hidden on my hard drive when it's already finished.

Wow... I guess I wasn't alone. The same thing happened to me, and I ended up doing the same thing. [link] See? But the one that commissioned me no longer has his account so it might be the same person.

Yeah, sucks when stuff like that happens. I'm pretty sure it's the same guy... ever since I blocked ~455510 I've been getting occasional messages from a ~lord890 who seems very concerned about why I blocked 455510 and also wanted to know about commissions... and uses the same style of broken english...

Seems the guy might have an awful lot of accounts...

Well 455510 just sent me a note to tell me he knew Pokemon111 in RL. Pokemon111 is the one that never paid me and he was from Russia, witch might exsplain the bad english. I don't know why 455510 bothered to tell me that he knew Pokemon111, doesn't really matter, but does make me think...
And I agree, it's probibly all the same person.

Well he paid for the B&W before I started. I could have just not colored it all unless he paid the second part, but honestly it was probably less work to just color it from the start. I was basically holding the colors hostage until payment...

But it's been months and I'm not even doing commissions anymore, so whatever. He can have the colored version for all I care; I'm not gonna hide my own hard work because of him.

To be honest, on forums I've seen the commissioner on... he's not exactly... the smartest person. Trying to post work he never requested, commissioned or drew on several sites and passing them as his own.

Irregardless, it is a very good and comedic piece of art once all the payment things are out of the way.

In a nutshell: I lol'd

Yeah, I've heard of him cheating other artists before; =cluedog contacted me at one point to get some payment dates and it turned out he had been paying me while shortchanging other artists saying he didn't have the money. Kind of a shady guy.

Agreed, I was constantly Noting him and leaving comments asking him if he had permission from original artists. Half the time, I'd let the original artists know and they'd be furious.

It's sad to hear that he drove you to not take commissions anymore.

He was more of a last straw. I had been considering closing commissions for about three months when he started pissing me off; figured that was as good a time as any to close up shop.

Just "regardless" works.

True enough, I suppose.

Sad he never paid... (Did he simply forget? Or did he refuse?)

Only problem with commissions, though, is that there are horror stories on the OTHER side as well. People who demanded payment ahead of time and never did their work, and such. (Okay, technically I never finished that one thing Andrea commissioned me for, but only 'cause her friend never gave me the info. A year later, with occasional reminders to them that never got met, I've finally gotten her to ask for OTHER things, which I'll get to after nano.)

What the world really needs is a system of payment that allows for trades. (I had a free moment when someone asked me my opinion, and designed a working system, or what I think is one, but... well... what the hell do i know about setting things like that up? :P)

There are various systems to handle that sort of thing. The most obvious is contractual obligation; if a legal contract is signed stating the amount to be paid and describing the work to be done it's a simple matter for either side to take the other to court when something goes wrong.

There are also third party agencies whose entire purpose is to facilitate the safe exchange of currency for goods or services; the artist could ask that the payment be delivered into the care of such a third party who would then hold the money until the artist provided the artwork to the same third party. Said third party would then deliver payment and product to the proper recipients after verifying that everything is satisfactory.

The biggest problem is that when you're talking about deals that are generally less than $100 (IE most commissions on DA) none of these options make any financial sense. Just talking to a lawyer about writing up a contract could easily cost more than the actual commission, and actually taking the contract to court would be horrifically expensive (Court expenses paid only if you actually win...).

It's a bad situation all around but for the small sums I see on DA I usually side with the artists. The artist puts his name and reputation at stake if he fails to finish a commission while his client is likely to be more-or-less anonymous. The artist stands to gain a small sum of money at the cost of serious defamation while the client stands to gain a small service at no cost whatsoever.

not completely true as it's not like the artists true identity is exposed on DA (unless they decide to make it so) so a artist only stakes as much reputation as much as there willing, they could very easily make a new ID or disappear if they wanted though it is admittedly easier for the average commissioner.

I agree with the point on the lawyers, the cost of even a low key one is far greater then the cost of the average deviant commission so it would really be a no win situation for both sides unless you want to take it up on a 'peoples' court show.

Having been burned as a commissioner I do understand the annoyance, it essentially feels like theft.

I've only heard of it - things like them disappearing altogether, or taking donations and saying they have to use them for something else.

I meant more an online variant of the third person thing, though. It would work, with the right system, but it would require someone with programming skills, and a willingness to do it. (Paypal could do it themselves just by adding some additional options, most likely.)
